British girl believed killed in Syria ‘was too scared to flee Isis'.
Sources say Kadiza Sultana feared being caught and publicly executed if she tried to escape group’s stronghold of Raqqa.
A London schoolgirl thought to have been killed in an airstrike in Syria was fearful of the risks involved in trying to rescue her from Islamic State and could not “make the leap of faith” needed to try to escape, sources have told the Guardian.
Kadiza Sultana, who left her home in Bethnal Green, east London, during the half-term break in February 2015 with friends Shamima Begum and Amira Abase, is believed to have died in the terror group’s stronghold of Raqqa earlier this year.
Sultana is thought to have become disillusioned with life in Raqqa and had been considering attempting to make her way back to Britain.
But sources on Friday said the former Bethnal Green academy student feared the dangers of such a plan failing were too high, and that she would be caught and publicly executed, a fate that befell an Austrian woman who tried to flee Isis.

Following talks with the new Argentina coach, Edgardo Bauza, Messi’s name was included in the squad to face Uruguay and Venezuela next month.
Messi, Argentina’s captain and record goalscorer with 55, said in a statement reproduced by the Argentinian newspaper La Nación: “I see there are many problems in Argentinian football and I don’t intend to create another one. I don’t want to cause any damage, I’ve always tried to do just the opposite, to help all that I can.
“We need to fix many things in Argentinian football, but I prefer to do this from inside and not criticise from outside.”
Messi said he was quitting international football after missing a penalty in the Copa América final shoot-out in New Jersey. That would have left Messi – one of the most decorated players in history at club level with Barcelona – having never won a major trophy with Argentina.
As well as June’s defeat to Chile, the world player of the year also tasted defeat in the 2007 and 2015 Copa América finals, as well as in the World Cup final in 2014.
He added: “Many things went through my head the day of the last final and I seriously thought of leaving, but I love this country and this shirt too much. I’m grateful to all the people who wanted me to continue playing with Argentina, hopefully we can give them something to cheer about soon.”
Argentina face Uruguay at home on 1 September and Venezuela away on 6 September.

Hakeem Bello, media adviser to Babatunde Fashola, minister of power, works and housing, intimated TheCable of the development on Saturday.
The bridge was recently shut down indefinitely so as to carry out repairs on a collapsing part of the structure.
Following its closure, the minister had disclosed that the ever-busy bridge had not been properly maintained since it was built 40 years ago.
“It is a sobering experience that the federal government is now dealing with many years of neglect and abuse of the bridge by traders. There are many other bridges across the country that are begging for attention, maintenance and repairs.”
“The bridge has really been battered and abused by us, and as a result, we are having the contractor now to do a total evaluation of what is seen and unseen, so that we can restore the bridge to something close to its original form by the time we finish.
“We will change the expansion joints, mill the surface, replace the surface and also replace some of the reinforcements and strengthen them. We cannot reach a conclusion until we see all the engineering requirements, designs and costs”, Fashola had said.
The minister had also noted that repair of the bridge was not captured in the 2016 budget, hence work would begin in 2017.
Fashola’s aide, who released photos of ongoing repair works, however, failed to disclose reasons for the expedited action.

“Mend has no implied, direct or express authority of Nnamdi Kanu to represent him or IPOB in any purported negotiation going on between mend and the federal government,” the lawyers stated.
The self-acclaimed leader of the IPOB and two others are standing trial before a Federal High Court in Abuja on a six-count charge of treasonable felony, managing unlawful society and concealing goods.

Fuel scarcity looms as NPA, NNPC disagree over N6bn debt.
Nigerians face a fresh round of fuel scarcity as the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) is restraining berthing of ships contracted by Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) over a contentious N6 billion debt.
A top NPA official told Saturday Sun that the NNPC’s debt would have towered above the said amount had it (NPA) not granted the national oil company about 30 per cent rebate.
Consequently, some vessels laden with petroleum products under an NNPC contract are ‘stranded’ on the high seas. Saturday Sun gathered that one of the affected vessels belongs to a shipping company owned by a former National Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
“The company owes the NPA a whopping $2 million. That money can help us achieve a lot. It’s not good to enjoy services and not pay for them”, he said.
He added that the NPA was also insisting on collecting its payments in dollars as against being paid in naira at any exchange rate which is not certain due to fluctuations in the foreign exchange market.
“Vessels owned by the PDP chieftain’s company and other ships laden with premium motor spirit are presently seeking berthing space at the Capital Oil Jetty in Ibafon Lagos. But we need to get our money. We’re not a charity organisation”, the source added.
The NPA official said he was aware that its insistence on collecting the monies before the vessels discharge may lead to fuel scarcity, but said it appears that is likely to spur the national oil giant to pay up.
The Hadiza Bala Usman-led NPA had repeatedly said it would not treat the issue of debts with kid gloves. Recent moves indicate the new management team has commenced serious debt recovery drive aimed at addressing chains of indebtedness spanning between one to 10 years.
On Thursday, the Managing Director of NPA, Hadiza Bala Usman told some terminal operators in Calabar that the authority will ensure maximum collection of all fees due to the government while urging them to stick to the terms of agreements entered with government.
Terminal operators who paid fees to NPA in naira in June 2016, have had their money returned, as the authority insisted that the payments be made in United States dollars as specified.

Nigeria Vs Denmark, Siasia backs boycott of match by Dream Team.
The coach of Nigeria’s Olympic football squad, Samson Siasia, said on Friday that he will support players boycotting Saturday’s football quarter-final against Denmark over unpaid allowances.
“We have only been paid allowances for 11 days. There is no match bonus. What about all the months we have been training in Nigeria and Atlanta? That’s not fair,” Siasia told Nigerian radio.
Nigeria have been embroiled in one crisis after another during the Rio Games.
They were stranded for several days at their training base in Atlanta before flying to Brazil, and then the players had to beg Siasia not to quit after a win over Sweden.
“We have been disrespected from all angles – by the the sports ministry, the Nigeria Football Federation. Is that how you will treat your own children? We are not street kids,” Siasia said, adding that he had not received his salary “for the past five months”.
“Everything is upside down and the boys don’t want to play anymore. Whatever they want to do, I’m with them. They are right for fighting for their rights.
“I cannot do more than what I have done to get this team up to this level. I have done my best and now I am tired.”

Kabukabu: Survival strategy for Abuja civil servants. See why.
By Fortune Eloagu
It is not unusual for people to operate “kabukabu”, Nigeria’s parlance for unregistered cabs. What is, however, news is that it has gradually become a way of life especially in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), for most civil servants.
Residents of the nation’s capital have come to accept it as a part of the city’s transport system. Daily Sun findings indicate that there are two types of kabukabu operators; namely, those who do it for livelihood because of unemployment and others who are duly employed but make out time to use their vehicles as “kabukabu.”
The latter are mostly public servants who use their vehicles to comb the city to pick up commuters or passengers especially while coming to work in the morning and returning home after work. Some others still operate during work hours. They include civil servants who may have less to do in the office, policemen, soldiers, and personnel of other paramilitary agencies like the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
Investigations reveal that personnel of the prisons and immigration services also indulge in “kabukabu” business and their preferred route is the Airport Road, ostensibly because their offices are located along the road.
This trade is no longer exclusive for men. Some women also traverse the city with their vehicles engaging in “drop and pick.” The few women involved either ply routes outskirts of the city centre like Lugbe and Nyanya-Mararaba, while those who cover the city centre are usually seen on the Berger-Area 1 and Federal Secretariat-Area 10-Area 1 routes.

APC to generate N1.27b from membership registration.
…Says party won’t sanction gladiators over budget padding scandal
From Romanus Ugwu, Abuja
The All Progressives Congress (APC), has revealed that it has the capacity to generate a whopping N1.27 billion from the registration of its members as part of the measures to raise funds to tackle financial challenges facing the ruling party.
The party’s Deputy National Chairman, North, Lawali Shuaibu, who made the disclosure in a chat with journalists at the headquarters of the party on Thursday, said that they will generate the fund from the over 2.7 million registered members in the party’s database.
While commenting on the funding of the party, the party chieftain said: “For your information, the party has very credible source of funding. Every member of APC in this country shall pay N100 annually. We have over 12.7 million registered members on our database so far.
“There are still others waiting for us to commence fresh registration by opening our portal. Assuming the number we have our database pay, if you multiple N100 per member by 12.7 registered members, you know what the party will realise. So, we have our source of funding,” he said.
On the possibility of current hardship in Nigeria affecting the party’s fortunes in 2019, he said: “You are talking of hardship just one year into the administration of the party, and people are expecting magic. They forgot the 16 years of destruction by the former ruling party.
“People are busy talking of hardship but they are the same people that pleaded and prayed to God to send somebody to come and correct these things and save the situation. It is not fair that people expect it to happen overnight. All we ask for is patience,” he noted.
Admitting that the party is encountering some challenges, the party leader said: “The challenges facing the party are already in the public domain and they range from the problem at the National Assembly to the impressions media have branded the party.
On whether Nigerians should expect sanctions from the party for the gladiators of the budget padding scandal, he said: “To start with, what is budget padding. The party does not sanction anybody except when a member contravenes sections of the party constitution in his conduct. That is why I referred you to the relevant section of the party constitution.
“For your information, the party is not a law enforcement organisation.
“People are claiming that we want to sweep something under the carpet, we will not, but we cannot do those things in public or market place. We do it in the party secretariat,” he said.
The party leader equally spoke on the lingering date for the planned midterm convention, stressing: “It will soon hold but it is a midterm convention, we are waiting for the committee looking at the party constitution.
“The most important thing we want to do at the convention is to affect some amendments to the constitution. After having operated it for two years, we have found where it is inadequate and we want to bring it to perfection,” he said.
