Americans in Franklin, New Jersey, will vote for Charles Ejike Onyejiaka, a fellow citizen and a transplant from Imo State, Nigeria, as the U.S. general election unfolds today.
Mr. Onyejiaka, a democrat, is the incumbent in a two-way race for Ward 3 Councilman seat in Franklin. He was one of three men presented to Franklin Town Council as fill-in candidates for the unexpired term of Phil Kramer, former Ward 3 Councilman, who became Mayor of Franklin last January.
Mr. Onyejiaka beat Alex Kharazi and Azim Uddin, also democrats and immigrants, to succeed Kramer. Today, he is contesting against Beverly Briggs-Lawson, a Republican, in the general election.
Mr. Onyejiaka is one of four Americans of Nigerian descent whose names are on ballots in grassroots elections at township and county levels this year. The others are George Chidi, Rasheed ‘BJ’ Dawodu and April Ademiluyi. All four are product of currents of civic engagement by hundreds of immigrants and first generation Americans who maintain their ties to Nigeria even as they live relatively comfortable lives in the United States.
The rising crescendo of political engagement by Nigerian-Americans is, in some ways, personified by the emergence of Nigerian-American Public Affairs Committee or NAPAC-USA, a self-described “political and social welfare think tank where the intellectual and numerical assets of Nigerians and Nigerian-Americans could be harnessed to invigorate our active participation in American political and civic life”.
The organization originated from the exertion of an intense, voluntary, electioneering campaign by some Nigerian-Americans on behalf of a Democratic candidate in California’s 36th District during the 2011 special election.
Spurred by the impact of their collective energy, the volunteers decided to create a permanent front which, with an eye on the 2012 general election, was organized as a political action committee named Nigerian-American Political Action Committee or NAPAC.
NAPAC and NAPAC-USA are legally registered entities now, the former as a 501 (c) 3 public welfare foundation and the latter as a 501 (c) 4 non-partisan membership advocacy group. NAPAC Foundation exists for the sole purpose of fostering and carrying “out the vision and objectives of NAPAC-USA and its state PACs”. Under American law, a PAC or political action committee can raise and spend unlimited amount of money on behalf of a political candidate or to support an issue.
NAPAC Foundation is yet to accumulate the billion dollar war chest some super PACs are famous for, but it did raise $50,000 for the Obama re-election Campaign because of what the group describe as “our excitement that someone with African roots had the historic opportunity to seek and was actually elected to the highest office of the land”.
Its campaign contribution in this election circle has not been disclosed but there is cause to believe that NAPAC has become the veritable gathering place for Nigerian-American activists across the United States, be they aspirants for political office or community advocates.
Of the four Americans of Nigerian descent running for office this year, only Onyejiaka seems to have no contact with the organization. Chidi and Dawodu attended NAPAC Convention in Atlanta, Georgia, this past September where they mingled with professionals, entrepreneurs and activists from as many as ten states and from cities as far as Los Angeles, New York, Detroit and Baltimore. They had the honor of being the only nominees for electoral positions this year but not the distinction of being the only break-out politicians at the convention.
Also present was Tinuade Pena, a first generation American who spent part of her formative years in Lagos. An engineer and business owner, Ms. Pena is also a U.S. Army sergeant and long-time resident of Florida’s Royal Palm Beach. She was a Democratic candidate for District 86 of the Florida House of Representatives this year but lost to a fellow veteran during the primary election in August.
George Chidi is also a veteran and, the son of George Njoku Chidi, a native of Umuoye in Imo State. The younger George is running for a seat on the Board of Commissioners in DeKalb County, Georgia. His story reads almost like that of Barack Obama. His dad arrived Massachusetts in 1970 on a student visa, met his mum who is a Caucasian of Polish descent.
They got married and, unlike Obama’s dad, the older George stayed in the United States. George junior was an active duty soldier in the 25th Infantry Division of the U.S. Army for five years and, he has been a journalist and civic leader for twenty years.
Of the four Nigerian-Americans running for office, he seems to have the deepest connection to his constituents and the widest name recognition among Americans and Nigerian-Americans alike. He defeated eight other aspirants to become the Democratic nominee for this general election which he is strongly favored to win. He is very supportive of the Nigerian immigrant community, he is a known face at their social events and an active promoter of worthy causes, including the candidacy of Rasheed Bolaji (or ‘BJ’) Dawodu.
Mr. Dawodu, a Democrat, is running against Republican Kristie King for the position of Tax Commissioner in Fayette County, Georgia. A small business owner and seasoned financial management professional, Dawodu relocated to the United States from his native Lagos (Isale Eko) more than 20 years ago. He worked extensively in the public sector before going into private practice, his bid for office of the Tax Commissioner is actively supported by Fayette Chamber of Commerce and his immigrant constituency.
April Ademiluyi is the only female American of Nigerian descent contesting in the general election and she is contesting for a judicial not administrative position. She is a candidate for the Seventh Circuit Court in Prince George’s County, Maryland. April is a first generation American with roots in the Ademiluyi royal family in Ife.
Election into Circuit Courts is non-partisan, candidates participate in as many party primaries as they choose but they have to win at least one primary to get on the ballot. Ms. Ademiluyi won the Libertarian Party primary.
Prince George’s county is reputed to be home to some of the richest Nigerians in the United States, there have been some local fund raising gatherings to support April’s candidacy. She also got a boost from NAPAC president, Mr. Segun Adeyina who came from Georgia to campaign for her.
Township and county level elections usually do not attract polling agencies so it is not easy to track the progress of these candidates. One thing that can be said for all of them is, if elected, their constituencies will get top-tier professionals and more in each of them.
Charles Onyejiaka has a degree in Electronics Engineering from Thomas Edison State University, he is also something of a veteran public servant with experience dating back to Nigeria’s Second Republic.
Born in Nkwerre, Mr. Onyejiaka grew up in a family of public servants whose record of civic engagement reached its zenith during Nigeria’s Second Republic when Sam Mbakwe was governor of Imo State. His uncle served as a commissioner while an aunt worked as special assistant in the governor’s office. Charles has followed the footsteps of his Nigerian family in his new country.
In 2015, he mobilized voter turn-out in numbers that proved good enough to give Democrats their first mayoral victory in Franklin Township. He is prominent member of the local Catholic community and has served on the Township Planning Board.
George Chidi has a bachelor degree in Journalism, MBA from Georgia Tech and was chief executive officer of a firm that markets competitive intelligence for corporate clients.
Rasheed Dawodu has degrees in accounting, law, public finance and is a certified fraud examiner. He has worked for Fortune 500 firms including General Electric and Georgia Pacific.
April Ademiluyi has a first degree was in Chemical Engineering, law degree from an Ivy League university and has been recognized by Congressional leaders for working with families facing foreclosure.

Police Destroy Indian Hemp Farm In Osun.
Osun State Police Command has destroyed a large expanse of Indian hemp farms at Agbongbon village in Irewole local government area of Osun state and arrested four suspects.
The Commissioner of Police in Osun State, CP Fimihan Adeoye when speaking with Amiloaded Correspondents today said the operation was aimed at cutting the supply of Indian hemp as a way of preventing youths from smoking the weeds and curtail crime from the root.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police in the state DCP Aminu K Koji led the operation in which the Indian hemp planted in the farms were destroyed with herbicides while the dried one that was ready for the market was burnt.
The CP said “We have declared a total war against Indian hemp cultivation and supply in Osun State. This is necessary to prevent youths from getting the weeds to smoke and this strategy was designed to nip the crime in the bud.”
The CP also told Amiloaded Correspondents that four suspects including Osasa Ansah, Saliu Koku, Musliu Ibrahim and Salimu Koku were arrested in connection with the farms and that they would face the full wrath of the law to serve as deterrent to others.
“Most criminals get energised when they take cannabis and that is why we are trying to cut the supply of India hemp to Osun and other neighbouring states so that they won’t get Indian hemp to smoke. This would surely reduce the crime rate and our youths would be normal and behave well.”
“Those planting the Indian hemps are trying to make money at the expense of other people and destroying the lives of many youths. They are also affecting the economy negatively because they don’t allow the economy trees to stay in the areas where they weeds are planted.”
The CP commended the state governor, Mr Rauf Aregbesola for assisting the police in the state to be able to fight crime and provide security for the people of the state.

Militants Bomb Oil Pipeline In Warri.
Nigerian militants on Tuesday bombed a state-run oil pipeline near the southern port city of Warri, the second attack within a week, a community leader and army officer said. “The line which was undergoing repair after the previous attack … was billed for commissioning either today or tomorrow,” before the latest attack, chairman of Batan community Dickson Ogugu told AFP.
He said four surveillance guards deployed to protect the Trans Forcados export line narrowly escaped death after the militants opened fire on them. “The hoodlums after chasing them from the spot came down from their speedboat, planted dynamite on swamp boogie, barge, crane and on the line,” he said. “Unfortunately, only the dynamite on the barge exploded and immediately sank into the water. As I speak to you, the military are at the scene of the incident trying to dismantle the other dynamites.”
An army officer, who did not want to be named, confirmed the incident. “We heard the shots in the middle of the night, but as you know, we do not patrol the area at night, so there was nothing we could do,” he said. The line has been previously targeted by rebels. Last week, the line was bombed just hours after President Muhammadu Buhari met with representatives of militant groups in the Niger delta to discuss how to end the unrest wracking the region. The state-owned Pipelines and Product Marketing Company (PPMC) operates the pipeline which receives crude from the Batan flowstation and feeds the Forcados export terminal.
Since the start of the year, several militant groups have attacked oil facilities, slashing the nation’s output and hammering revenues. The militants claim to be seeking a fair share of the nation’s oil wealth for local residents as well as political autonomy for the region. The government has launched peace talks with the rebels to end the violence.

Fayose Visits Femi Fani-Kayode In Detention.
The Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose, Tuesday said the continued detention of these former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani Kayode by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and described his continued detention was an act of vendetta.
Speaking with newsmen after his visit, the governor called on the federal government to stop playing god and allow the former minister to enjoy bail earlier granted to him by the court.
The governor questioned the rationale behind the former ministers continued detention since the EFCC has resolved to arraign him on November 10.
“The continued detention of the former minister was to demoralize him but unfortunately, the man was in high spirit when I met him.
“He is not worried, after all, a man must be brave. We share prayer together that this persecution will come to pass and it will surely come to pass.
“I am here to visit and identify my friend, Chief Fani-kayode. I came into Abuja yesterday and I am being my brother’s keeper, and I felt that within the 24 hours that I will spend in Abuja I have to visit him.
“I met him in an office. They brought him in an office to see me. He is in good spirit. But when you state, there are two different issues. If you say state of mind, he is in good spirit. But I don’t have accept to where he sleeps and the condition in which he is kept but speaking with, he is in good spirit.
The governor hinted that former Minister would be charged to court on November 10.
He said “it is obvious that the commission has made up their mind on charge him on the November 10. And it shows that they have made up their mind even before I visited him. He has been granted bail before and I would have expected them to allow him to go and come back since he didn’t run away. So I just believe that this over zealousness will cease and get better.”
On concerns over recent spates of high profile visits to the anti-graft facility he said ” these people are only accused. An accused person are at liberty to be visited even people convicted are to be visited. They are human beings it is there right to be visited.
“Are you saying that people should be locked away without access to family and friends that would be abuse to human rights. There is a difference between being accused and found guilty. After from that even if you are found guilty people still have a right to visit you.”

Senate demands daily oil production, sales report from DPR
Leke Baiyewu, Abuja
The Senate has asked the Department of Petroleum Resources to henceforth prepare and forward to it daily records of oil and gas production and sale in the country.
The Chairman of the committee, Senator Tayo Alasoadura, who led members to the headquarters of the DPR in Lagos on oversight visit, said the data would give the upper chamber of the National Assembly an opportunity to have deeper knowledge of activities in the petroleum sector.
Alasoadura, who decried the failure by government agencies to provide information on their activities to the legislature, said the trend must stop.
He said, “The problem with us is that we don’t think the National Assembly is part of the government. I have always told people: take the National Assembly away from governance, there is no more democracy. There is the executive; there is legislature; and there is the judiciary. But it’s only when you have the legislature, which will act as a check on the executive, that there is democracy.
“So, whatever is worth doing for the executive must also be done for the legislature, so that at the end of the day, we will all understand and speak with one voice.”
Alasoadura, however, expressed satisfaction with the performance of the department, saying it had lived up to the expectations of the people.
He said, “We are very impressed by what we saw. A lot of rumours fly around about the seeming incompetence of the DPR. But from all the efforts they are putting into getting the required results for this country in information gathering, going technical or going ballistic, let me put it that way, I think they are putting in their best.
“And I believe that in a few more years’ time, doing business in the oil industry in this country will be so transparent that even people will be able to read what is happening in the oil industry from their bedrooms and from their offices, and that will be a day for Nigeria.”
Alasoadura also said the Senate would seek additional funding for the DPR as what was made available to the department was inadequate to meet its targets for the ongoing year.
The committee also pledged to seek the amendment of the existing laws to raise the DPR’s workforce from the current 1,120 in order to enhance it efficiency.
The Director, DPR, Mr. Mordecai Ladan, said that the department was actively working to launch an innovation that would enable it to monitor oil production, delivery to locations as well as compliance with fuel prices by filling stations from its offices.
He, however, lamented that its operations were being hampered by inadequate funding and workforce.

NLC warns against another fuel price increase
Akinpelu Dada, Fidelis Soriwei and Okechukwu Nnodim
The Nigeria Labour Congress has warned the Federal Government against any further increase in the pump price of petroleum products, especially Premium Motor Spirit, otherwise called petrol.
The warning is coming as the retail stations of the Nigerian Petroleum Corporations in the Federal Capital Territory and its environs have increased the pump price of the PMS to N145 from the initial N141.
Similarly, some private marketers of petroleum products are now selling petrol in their outlets at N150 per litre.
One of our correspondents reported that some filling stations in Lagos and Ogun states had refrained from selling the product.
For instance, the Oando filling stations at Alapere and Berger as well as the Mobil filling station opposite the Magodo Estate gate did not dispense the product to members of the public since Friday.
Similarly, the Ascon and NNPC stations between Arepo and Magboro, off the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Ogun State, did not sell the product on Sunday, raising fears of another round of fuel scarcity.
The General Secretary, NLC, Dr. Peter Ozo-Eson, told one of our correspondents on the telephone on Sunday that it would be insensitive on the part of the government to increase fuel price in view of the current hardship in the land.
Ozo-Eson added, “Well, we have been clear on this matter from the beginning that once you submit the determination of the prices of the products to the market, the way they are doing it in an import regime, that will devalue the naira. Therefore, they will come back and tell you the prices are not realistic. We knew that from the beginning and we said so.
“The fact of the matter is that any attempt to increase the price of fuel now, given the level of hardship and the level of suffering Nigerians are going through, will be regarded as extremely insensitive.”
The NLC secretary pointed out that while the NLC was opposed to any further adjustment in the price of fuel, it was up to Nigerians to also decide how to live with such an adjustment.
He stated, “We do hope that Nigerians will realise that this has no end, and what the government is doing will continue to impose extreme hardship on them, and they need to tell the government that enough is enough.
“Other than that, we oppose any adjustment in the pump price. If the government goes ahead to do it, it will indicate what we hinted right from the beginning that the policy adopted was wrong, and it remains wrong.
“It is up to Nigerians to oppose it. We provided the necessary leadership based on our understanding of the issues and the reality is coming home to roost and it is never too late. Nigerians will have to take the decision as to how they have to live with it.”
While the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency refused to confirm or deny any plan to adjust the price of petrol, one of our correspondents quoted officials of marketing firms as blaming the increase in the pump price on the high cost of the commodity at depots.
The pricing template of the PPPRA for PMS was last updated on May 24, 2016 and it had the pump price at a band of N135 to N145 per litre.
When asked to comment on whether the PPPRA was on the verge of hiking petrol price, the agency’s Acting Executive Secretary, Mrs. Sotonye Iyoyo, stated that forex had remained a challenge and noted that the agency works with the prevalent market fundamentals when determining or fixing petrol price.
Iyoyo said “Today as we know there is scarcity of foreign exchange and when we want to fix prices we look at the market fundamentals. We don’t just fix prices without looking critically at the fundamentals of the market.
“There is a price band that is between N135 and N145. The maximum is N145, and so anyone selling at that price is still within the price band.”
A source told one of our correspondents that marketers had stopped importing petrol into the country because the landing cost had gone beyond what the PPPRA stated in the template for the product and the government, through the NNPC, had failed to meet its promise of supplying the importers’ forex needs.
The source explained that due to the crisis in the Niger Delta, the NNPC was finding it difficult to generate enough forex from crude sale as the nation was losing an average of one million barrels per day to the bombing of crude pipelines and vandalism of critical infrastructure.
According to him, the marketers have resorted to getting the product from the Pipelines and Product Marketing Company at around N132 per litre, whereas the actual landing cost of the product is between N136 and N137 per litre, adding that the NNPC was currently subsidising the cost of petrol.
However, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, has faulted the increase in the pump price of petrol by the NNPC mega stations and other private filling stations.
The minister, who said the price increase was done without his knowledge, said he would investigate the development, adding that he would also meet with oil marketers to discuss issues concerning fuel price.
Speaking on the sidelines of an award ceremony and dinner organised by the PPPRA branch of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria on Saturday night, Kachikwu said the instability in the foreign exchange market had been a challenge to the oil importation business.
When asked if the N4 increase in the pump price of petrol by the NNPC stations was a sign of an imminent hike in the rate, the minister said, “First, I am not aware that the NNPC has increased the price. I need to look into that; it is a bit of surprise for me because there are processes in doing this. If they have done that, it means they are doing it wrongly. Let me find out what the facts are.
“Having said that, the reality is that what we did at the point when we did some liberalisation was to enable the free market to float the price. Obviously, as you look at foreign exchange differentiation and all that, it will impact (on the pump price). The worst thing you can do is to go back to an era where we basically will be fixing prices.
“What we ought to be doing is to watch the prices, making sure that they are not taking advantage of the common man, making sure that the template is respected. One of the things I think we had hoped to do, which we should still do before we embark on any price increase, is to work on that template.”
Kachikwu stated that despite the harsh reality with respect to forex availability, the government was ready to tweak some of the components making up the price of petrol in order to forestall any increase in price.
He said, “There are still areas that are within the government’s control like payments to the Ministry of Transportation and the rest, and payments to the Nigerian Ports Authority that are foreign-currency denominated. We are working on the possibility of being able to shift that out so that you still can modulate the prices within where it is right now. But I will hold a conversation with the industry and see how it is going.
“However, what is key is that I never want to see fuel queues back. Those who are investing must be able to predict the pricing methodologies, the pricing consequences and the actions to be able to justify their investments. At the end of the day, I think the PPPRA is the one that has the authority to say it is time the template does justify some level of movement, otherwise you have a crisis of individual decisions on pricing.”
PUNCH.

UNIOSUN sacks randy lecturer involved in sex video.
Femi Makinde, Osogbo
The Governing Council of the Osun State University, Osogbo, has terminated the appointment of Dr. Olabode Ojoniyi of the Department of Languages and Linguistics, Ikire Campus, caught on video having an amorous relationship with one of his students, Mercy Ikwue.
Our correspondent gathered on Sunday that the Governing Council headed by Mallam Yusuf Ali SAN, sacked the lecturer, who appeared nude on a bed in a hotel room and caressing Miss Ikwue.
A member of the Governing Council confirmed the sacking of Ojoniyi to our correspondent in Osogbo on Sunday.
He said, “The Council met last week and the report of the panel that investigated Ojoniyi’s amorous affair with the female student was deliberated upon. His appointment was terminated because that is the penalty stated in the Code of Conduct of Staff of Osun State University.”
Apart from the member of the Governing Council, three other lecturers including two professors confirmed to our correspondent that Ojoniyi had been sacked.
Part II articles 15 and 23 of the Code of Conduct for Staff and Students of UNIOSUN read, “ An academic staff shall not conduct himself/ herself in relation to students in such a manner that derogates from his status as a lecturer, examiner and adviser. Specifically, sexual harassment of students by (members of) staff is totally forbidden. Any (member of) staff found guilty of sexual harassment shall be dismissed from the service of the university and may be handed over to relevant state authority for prosecution.
“An academic (member of) staff shall not demand from students any gratification whether in cash or in kind including sexual gratification in the discharge of his/her lawful duties. Breach of this code shall warrant appropriate sanction ranging from warning to termination of appointment depending on the gravity of the offence.”
Ojoniyi’s sex act was captured in a video which is believed to have been surreptitiously recorded by the female student.
The female student was said to have been pressurised by Ojoniyi for sex and she eventually agreed and followed him to their agreed place with a laptop computer from which she pretended to be watching a movie, Things Fall Apart. Unknown to him, Miss Ikwue was actually recording their sexual activities.
Ojoniyi had accused one of the lecturers of the university, who was recently dismissed for an alleged misconduct as the person behind the drama. According to him, the lady was contracted to blackmail him. But Ojoniyi did not deny being the one in the video.
The video clip went viral afterwards and Ojoniyi, when contacted by our correspondent did not deny that he was the one in the video and did not say his image was manipulated. He only blamed his detractors for the incident.
The Acting Registrar of UNIOSUN, Bayo Shittu, who doubles as the secretary of the council, did not pick repeated calls put across to his telephone line.
He had yet to reply to the text sent to him to officially confirm the sacking as of the time of filing this report.
A professor at the university recently resigned his appointment over the alleged rape of a female student in his office.
Some lecturers and students of the university told our correspondent that the professor knew that he would be sacked if the case was investigated and he hurriedly resigned to prevent the embarrassment which would follow.
