Canada Warns Nigerian Asylum Seekers Crossing From US 'No Free Ticket'.

(CNN)Waves of asylum seekers continue to cross into Canada from the United States, drawing concerns that the numbers will only rise as the weather gets warmer.

Over the last year, Canada has seen what has been called an "unprecedented" surge of asylum seekers, with more than 25,000 people intercepted by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police as they crossed from the US since January 2017 to March 2018.

And this year, the rate appears to be growing.

The number of people intercepted in the first three months of 2018 more than doubled those in the same time period last year. And in 2017, the number of people intercepted at the border escalated in the summer.

Villagers Flee Into The Bush As Herdsmen Raid Adamawa Again.

Residents of at least five villages in Adamawa State are currently scuttling to the bush, following renewed attacks by herdsmen.

The villages — Nega, Bang, Gon, Bolki, and Nzumosu (all in Numan Local Government) — have been under sporadic attacks since last week Wednesday, although one or two villages, such as Yanga, have remained impenetrable to the attackers.

“The terrorists have wanted to attack since Friday [last week] but they were dispersed by a combination of CTU, Mopol and highway patrol,” one of the villagers, who asked not to be named for fear of being hunted down, told SaharaReporters on phone as he was running into the bush.

“However, on Monday, they started gathering close to Nega and 5am today, they burnt a church in the village.

“Already, before now, when the info went round about their gathering, villagers sent their women and children away, while only the men stayed back to defend their villages.”

Nega and Bang are on the border between Adamawa and Taraba, so they are the first villages on the path of the attackers, who are coming from Taraba state.

“Youth from all these other villages has been mobilizing support from Nega and Bang to prevent the attackers from reaching the other villages,” he continued.

“So, the attackers sensed they might face some resistance and decided to use another route to one of the villages, Gon, where they set rice farms on fire. Mind you, people are harvesting dry season rice at this moment.”

SaharaReporters confirmed that security forces were notified of the attack well before the assailants entered the villages but it was unclear what their response was.

Charging Of Tuition Fees In Federal Universities Illegal - FG.

The Federal Executive Council stated on Wednesday that no federal university should charge tuition fees, saying the law does not allow it.
The Minister of State for Education, Anthony Anwuka, stated this while briefing State House correspondents after the cabinet meeting presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

The minister said the council discussed the school fees being charged by various universities "and noted that as of law, no federal university should charge tuition fees."
He also stated that the council understood that some federal universities charged fees per course unit,

The minister said the government would investigate and stop this.
Anwuka said the National Universities Commission had been directed to clarify and update the council on the matter.

He said: “We understand some universities now charge fees per course unit and we are going to make sure that we investigate that properly and make it stop.
"Students can pay other auxiliary fees, but not in excess. Various university councils and management should be able to fix what fees students should pay that is affordable and acceptable to the students. That is the position.

"The federal government does not determine fees for private and state universities. It only takes responsibility for fees paid in the federal universities.”
The minister also disclosed that the council approved the insurance of provisional licence for the the establishment of Skyline University in Kano.

Sagay To Senate: You Are The Real Enemy Of Democracy, Not IGP

Prof. Itse Sagay, Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC) on Wednesday said the senate through their actions are constituting themselves as dangers to Nigeria’s democracy and not the Inspector- General of Police, Ibrahim Idris.
The Senate has declared the IGP as an enemy of democracy, saying he is unfit to hold a public office.

Senate President Bukola Saraki announced this on Wednesday during plenary at the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

But speaking in a chat with DAILY INDEPENDENT, Sagay said the IGP cannot be said to shun the senate as he sent a representative who is a DIG but was rejected by the Senate.

He said by abandoning their legislative duties to visit their colleagues who are facing trial, the national assembly has proven they are the real enemy of democracy.

“Absolutely not! I don’t think the IGP has constituted himself as enemy of our democracy”.

“It is the conduct of the senate that constitutes danger to democracy because of the way they frequently abandon their constitutional responsibilities and move en masse to engage in solidarity visits to their individual members who are undergoing trial in hospitals or other places. That is an indication of abandonment of democracy” .

“They have regularly abused their rights under this democracy and have demonstrated that they are not sufficiently mature to operate in liberal democracy. That is what I have seen”.

A Zambian woman reportedly divorced her illiterate husband who sponsored her education, saying she is no longer interested in marrying an uneducated man.

A Mansa woman has divorced her husband after he sponsored her to school from Grade 9 to University. When asked by the court why she was divorcing her husband 'Vincent', Maria Tembo said she was no longer interested in marrying someone who was not educated, adding that her friends were laughing at her because the husband was illiterate.

The two got married in 1997 and have two children together. The man had to sell his house he built in 1995 in order to take back his wife to school. The wife started Grade 9 and went to university in the school of education. And after being employed, she decided to divorce her husband in favour of a man she met at university.

The court has since ordered the woman to pay her ex husband K10,000 for abandoning him after sacrificing for her for 10 years.

"Youths Now Sniff Lizard Faeces” – Psychiatrist.

The President of the Association of Psychiatrists in Nigeria (APN), Dr Taiwo Sheikh, says according to a recent study, 85% of mad people in Nigeria are youths within the age bracket of 18-38.

The psychiatrist in a recent interview with Daily Independent, said the major cause of mental challenge in Nigeria has gone beyond drug abuse as the youths now inhale lizard faeces as well to get high.

According to him,
"Our young men are sniffing lizard faeces, they are putting their noses into pit toilets to inhale things from there and they are also smoking match sticks. It is now beyond the abuse of drugs sold in pharmacies. Before now, when you talk of substance use disorder your mind goes to use and abuse of substances like heroine, Indian hemp or cocaine but this trend has changed.”

Serbian referee Milorad Mažić, 45, will be the man in the middle for the 2018 final between Real Madrid and Liverpool.

The UEFA Referees Committee has announced that Serbian official Milorad Mažić will referee the 2018 UEFA Champions League final between Real Madrid and Liverpool on Saturday 26 May. The games will take place at NSC Olimpiyskiy Stadium in Kyiv.

Mažić, 45, has been an international referee since 2009. This season, he has taken charge of four UEFA Champions League matches, as well as two UEFA Europa League encounters. He also refereed last year's FIFA Confederations Cup final between Chile and Germany, as well as the 2016 UEFA Super Cup involving Real Madrid and Sevilla.

He was part of the refereeing teams at the 2014 FIFA World Cup and UEFA EURO 2016, and will go to Russia for this summer's FIFA World Cup.

NAFDAC Seals Off Emzor Pharmaceuticals, Others Over Codeine Abuse

Nigeria’s drugs and narcotics control agency, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) Monday sealed off three major pharmaceutical companies – Emzor Pharmaceuticals Ind. Ltd., Peace Standard Pharmaceutical Limited and Bioraj Pharmaceutical Limited following their ties to the codeine abuse and epidemic presently ravaging youths mostly in northern Nigeria.

The DG of NAFDAC, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye announced the development in a statement.

“Due to insufficient evidence gathered and apparent resistance to provide needed documents during our inspection on May 2, 2018 at the respective companies in Ilorin and Lagos, respectively, it has become necessary to shut down all product lines of the three companies – Peace Standard Pharmaceutical Limited. Plots 3 & 8, Adewole Industrial Estate, Lubcon Avenue, Ilorin, Kwara State; Bioraj Pharmaceutical Limited. No 405 Kaima Road, Ilorin, Kwara State and Emzor Pharmaceuticals Ind. Ltd., Ajao Estate, Lagos.

“This is to allow for a full and comprehensive investigation. The three companies therefore remain closed. The reopening of the manufacturing companies will depend on the level of cooperation that is shown during the comprehensive investigation,” the statement said.

A recent BBC documentary brought the codeine addiction to limelight with Nigeria’s first lady, Aisha Buhari and the leadership of the National Assembly warning that government must do more to curb the abuse of cough syrup, which contains codeine.

In response to the call, THEWILL recalls that the Ministry of Health banned the production and importation of cough syrup with codeine in the country.

Monday’s statement further said: “The Director General constituted a Task Force to be made up of NAFDAC Directors- Registration and Regulatory Affairs; Narcotics and Controlled Substances; and Drug Evaluation and Research.

“Members of PMG-MAN in the Committee included the Executive Secretary of PMG-MAN, Fidson Healthcare; May & Baker PLC; and Emzor Pharmaceutical Industries. It was stated that on May 2-3, 2018 “A team of nine NAFDAC officers (2 from Drug and Evaluation Research – DER and 7 from Investigation & Enforcement – I&E) and ten mobile police officers were sent to Ilorin, Kwara State on May 2 2018 to carry out investigational inspection at the companies of the two different pharmaceutical companies that are licensed to manufacture codeine-containing syrup, and which were implicated in the BBC documentary.

“The same investigational inspection by a different NAFDAC team took place on the same day and time as the Ilorin companies at the manufacturing facility of Emzor Pharmaceuticals Ind. Ltd., Ajao Estate, Lagos.

“The focus of the assignment was to access and monitor from records the utilization, sales and effective distribution of the codeine containing cough syrups to the end users.

“Meanwhile, meeting of the stakeholders mentioned above is being planned while the shut down and full investigation.

Dino Melaye: Ozekhome Tells Court Why Senator Jumped Off Police Van In Abuja

Mike Ozekhome, a senior advocate of Nigeria(SAN), says Dino Melaye, senator representing Kogi west, jumped out of a police vehicle because he did not want to die.

Ozekhome, who is Melaye’s counsel disclosed this at a high court in Lokoja, capital of Kogi state, on Monday.

The police had arrested the lawmaker and was conveying him to court when he attempted to escape.

But Ozekhome justified the action of his client, saying he was teargassed.

”The truth of the matter is that initially, the police told Melaye that they would take him to a high court in Abuja for prosecution but the police suddenly decided to head to Lokoja and Melaye said while they were in the vehicle, the police tear-gassed him twice,” Ozekhome said.

“Melaye protested against why they were taking him to Lokoja instead of Abuja. So, as soon as the vehicle carrying Melaye came to a standstill at Area One intersection roundabout, Melaye forced the door of the vehicle open and jumped down because he was gasping for breath and he did not want to suffocate and die.

”Again, when Melaye jumped from the bus and started shouting, the people around that area and his lawyers sympathised with him and took him to a medical centre in Abuja where the police again came and bundled him to the National Hospital in Abuja, where they chained him to his bed like a common criminal. ‘The question is if someone has the plan to jump bail, he will not allow himself to be in the hospital, he will run to his village or can even run out of the country.”

A high court in Kogi state has fixed May 10 to hear the bail application of Melaye.

Last week, the police arraigned him at a magistrate court in the state. He was charged with arming two suspects for kidnapping and robbery. The court remanded him in police custody.

The bail application by Ozekhome was denied by Suleiman Abdulahi, the magistrate, who asked the senator to spend five weeks in custody.

However, Nasir Ajanah, chief judge of the state, ordered that the senator should be taken back to the National Hospital, Abuja, following an application for bail.

Argument erupted as other tenants joined to ask for their money, Thinking that the issue will be resolved amicably, The Landlord bounced in the compound with some hefty soldiers this morning and woke the tenants up with Heavy Flogging.

They were beaten to the extent One of them even fainted and was rushed to a nearby Hospital, thats when the Soldiers stopped..

Niger State Consumes 30,000 Codeine Bottles Daily

More revelations have continued to trail an undercover investigation by the British Broadcasting Corporation on the codeine epidemic in Nigeria.

According to a research work carried out by the Development Initiative of West Africa (DIWA), 30,000 bottles of cough syrups containing codeine are consumed in Niger State daily.

The initiative further disclosed that 3 million bottles of the product are consumed across the nation on a daily basis.

Speaking at a quarterly DIWA awareness programme on the codeine menace, the Niger State DIWA boss, Mallam Musa Mohammed El-Sani, decried the high rate of consumption of the product by women and young people in the state.

The Nation quoted him as saying that the abusers’ addiction to codeine is harmful to their body and brain.

He said the alarming rate of addiction to codeine, which addicts consume to get high, is responsible for the increase in social vices and crimes such as kidnapping, raping, terrorism and killings in the country.

He commended the Federal Government for the ban on the substance and called for better monitoring of the black market, saying trading in the substance was still booming there.
